A name says a lot. I chose the name Crossing Waters for my psychology practice due to the richness of the metaphor. The visual of a person crossing waters is an excellent picture for the path that lies ahead in many of life's situations. We see where we want to go but the waters look rough and we question if we can make it to the other side. We don't want to stay where we are but the other side is the land of the unknown; who knows what it will hold for us. After all, where we are may not be working all that well but at least it is familiar territory. There is a certain "safeness" to the familiar, even if it comes at a cost.
Change is possible and the land on the other side can hold great promise of new life. With this being said, the journey is rarely easy and it also comes at a price. It involves hard work, a degree of risk, trust in the process, and periodic times of feeling as though you have lost your bearings. My aim is to provide a safe place for the struggle inherent in change and growth. Having another come along side of you can greatly help as you are faced with Crossing Waters.

I am a firm believer that while there is breath, there is hope. Metaphorically speaking, it is my job to come along side of you and help you gain your bearings. To do this we will determine where you are in your journey, which inherently includes knowing where you launched from and your desired destination. It is my job to have the tools readily available to assist you in navigating the rough waters. Whether you are facing long-standing familiar difficulties that continue to hinder you or encountering frightening situations for the first time that threaten to unravel life as you know it, you need to know there is hope. You do not have to struggle alone.
You will need to be ready to take a step into what can sometimes feel like the terrifying unknown. This readiness often comes about as you realize that the safety of the familiar is no longer worth the cost. You will need to be ready to take a step into what can sometimes feel like the terrifying unknown. This readiness often comes about as you realize that the safety of the familiar is no longer worth the cost. There is a growing awareness that where you are, and what you are doing, is no longer working...it is no longer life-giving. In fact, it is costing you and producing "death" in parts of your life. You are now willing to do something different. This could pertain to aspects of yourself, relational patterns, or manners of coping with difficult situations that are not healthy. While I can accompany you and help in the navigation, you will need to be willing to do the work...even if it's only one small step at a time.

Human beings are very complex. Each person, a unique individual. Every relationship, a dynamic pairing. And all situations are specific to time and place. No two paths are the same and traveling one path is very different than that of another. We will work together to get you where you want to go. Most often, this will not be fast and easy but there will be movement. Full disclosure up front - some things in life cannot be changed. For those situations, we will work towards how you can live more fully within the parameters that exist. Whatever the situation, when it's time to take that step, I will journey with you as you move forward.
I believe the therapeutic relationship is of utmost importance in treatment outcomes. With this in mind, I encourage you to evaluate your comfort level in our working relationship after 2-3 visits. It is important that you feel heard, supported and assured in my ability to address your presenting concerns as well as our ability to work together as a team. Inevitably, for a variety of reasons, this may not always be the case. I invite you to openly communicate any questions or concerns sooner rather than later. If it is not the best fit, I fully support and recommend transitioning to another therapist and, if needed, I will assist you in identification of alternative professionals. Work in the therapy room is not only an investment of your time and money, it is an investment of yourself - It is important that you spend these resources well.
