The driving force for my entering into this vocation originated with an observation of a gap that seemed to exist when Christians encountered psychological distress. The often fraught history between psychology and the Church appeared to leave two options. Seek services from a behavioral health professional equipped with the necessary psychological skill but who shares no grounding in, or appreciation for, a Christian faith worldview. Or alternatively, meet with a pastor who is ready to help, albeit with limited psychological training and/or time to navigate the situation at hand. One’s faith holds tremendous influence on worldview and subsequent navigation of the world. My desire is to be a trusted source for those on life's journey who recognize the place for, and unique contribution, of both Christian faith and psychological expertise. (Please note that being of the Christian faith is by no means a requirement to obtain services).
In an intentional effort towards the integration of the Christian faith and psychology, I obtained a dual major Bachelor's degree in Psychology and Biblical Studies from Columbia International University (Columbia, SC). This was followed by the completion of a Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from Wheaton College (Wheaton, IL). Securing my graduate degree from Wheaton allowed for coursework specific to faith and spirituality as well as integration of such into psychology specific coursework and training.
Over the course of seventeen years, my path to date has largely consisted of extensive experience in various hospital medical settings. In these settings, I have worked with varied medical and mental health conditions. Working within the context of interdisciplinary treatment teams in medical settings has fostered an understanding and value on seeing each person holistically - giving attention to the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects of health and wellbeing. This experience has also highlighted the importance of collaboration with other health care providers in delivering the best continuity of care and promoting optimal wellness. I will be glad to collaborate with your other health care providers at your request and with your expressed permission.
What is most influential and where does the "problem" lie? In nature or nurture, past or present, thoughts or feelings, you or others? As with so many aspects of life, it is very often a situation of both/and rather than either/or. The complexities of life have added up in such a way to lead you to this place in time. It is my job to come alongside you and help you gain clarity in the midst of that complexity, identify what is happening, help you arrive at a plan for moving forward, and work together to implement that plan. This requires a unique combination of interventions that are appropriate to your particular situation. Likewise, the duration of services will be dependent upon your particular situation. Treatment planning will be an ongoing discussion as we work as a team.
